I am excited about this one!! I have been thinking about this ever since I saw Saltburn. First of all, a FANTASTIC film in my opinion. JACOB ELORDI. IN ANGEL WINGS. That is all. Anyways, that's what I was hinting at with my most recent post on insta. I had this picture attached. I just think it is so beautiful and it kind of targets the same symbolism of Jacob Elordi's wings in Saltburn. Its gothic elements and romantic air is what makes not only this piece of art but Saltburn gravitate towards viewers. Now, let's get into today's topic. The influence of these films on fashion. Post Saltburn has spurred a ton of conversation about the reemergence of gothic and "messier" attire and makeup. Especially as it has reached different audiences with its release on streaming services (amazon prime). I have done a little research but mostly just gonna make some assumptions, so again, take this as you will. In terms of Saltburn, I bring up this film as it is the topic of the town now. Taking place in 2006, costume design found that they had a hard time initially finding pieces because quite literally people still had the pieces they needed in their closet. The juxtaposing style and haphazardly thrown on outfits seen may signal a shift into grungier territory for consumers today. With all of the fast fashion companies blowing up, there is also a direct parallel to this cheap sense of style present in 2006. As we all have heard, fashion moves in cycles, so maybe we will see the reemergence of this style seeing as how influential films are on clothing patterns. While the whole film does not necessarily embody this type of style, example being Elordi's often linen clothing or minimalist attire, we do see its face as the front of 2000s dress. Now, you may ask, JULIA where are you going with this? Well, think about it. How many tik toks have you seen of people recreating makeup looks or outfits from Saltburn? I know I have seen so many of the messy eyeliner looks like Venetia is always wearing paired with messy thrown about hair. I have also seen so many people romanticizing the lifestyle of Saltburn: oxford school, summers at a huge, sprawling mansion full of parties and romance. Therefore, why would they also not do this with clothes? I mean think of how many other films and TV shows you have watched that have influenced your attire. Sex and the City is notorious for its style. How about Gossip Girl? Rachel in Friends? We tend to pick our favorite fictional characters and emulate them in many different ways, style being one of them. I remember watching Little Women and WISHING I could just wear one of those little dresses one day in my life. However, back on track julia, we even saw the effects from the Barbie movie. more pink, more feminism. While it's not a direct, oh barbie wore this outfit, I am gonna wear it type of deal, it's more so the influence of what the movie embodies. Barbie showed the power of being feminine, and from that we have seen feminine trends arise, like one can say the Bow trend. I MEAN THINK OF THE EFFECT OF EUPHORIA. Every girl had on that Maddie two piece set. You know exactly what I am talking about. I also recently saw that many people are straying from the clean girl era to a messier era, so I think Saltburn plays into that clutter, messy trend we may see. Again, I am all over the place in this but, I just think you can also often tell what shows a person watches from how they dress. Think about your middle-aged dad in jeans and a cowboy hat, you can make an assumption on what he watches. You may be wrong but I can bet that you can guess it with 95% accuracy. Think of the artsy kids you see in your high school or in college/university. This is very broad example, but I can guess what films they watch from the picture of them that comes in my head. You get what I am putting down?? Same thing goes with music because I feel as though these two ideas live on the same line. I think one last point I want to make is the importance of romanticization on our style. We want to connect with these fictional characters and beings, and we tend to want to embody this in any way possible. Even unknowingly. This form of escapism is so common in art and media and it translates to our own interpretation of our personal style. Well, this was all over the place, but I just like getting my thoughts down. So let's sum up. Fast fashion and 2000s style seem so work hand in hand in terms of cheap style, so we can see its direct correlation to todays clothing trends. We can also see the effect of films on trends like the emergence of Euphoria makeup and attire as an example. Lastly, our desire to escape to different worlds alters our personal style as our desires are different for each person.
THE END :)
